Make Mine Mighty!
This collection of songs marks the end of a long road to recovery. 'If it ain't broke...' nearly didn't happen.
In May 2005 The Mighty Handful's singer and principal songwriter Matt Howes broke his finger playing 6-a-side football - yes, that X-Ray on the cover of the album is his! The injury was bad enough to call into doubt his ability to ever play guitar again.
But a life without playing was unthinkable, and Matt was determined to get his music heard, no matter how hard it would be.
From the boozy wake-up call of album opener 'Less Addled State' you might expect a barrage of guitars throughout - but instead it is the words that fly thick and fast.
The sweet yet sinister lilt of 'Music Made Me Lose It', the venomous attack on the mobile phone culture of 'Incommunicado' and the anti-folk anthem of 'Let You Down Gently' are counterbalanced by the honesty of 'How About You?' and 'Worried', and the pure romance of 'Angel Got the Devil' and 'Simple Love Song'.
Musically The Mighty Handful run the gauntlet, side-stepping between hard rock and smooth jazz in pursuit of the perfect pop song.
Ultimately, it is the songs that mark out this collection - stories that needed to be told - and music that makes the journey worthwhile.
